Sample Bedtime Story

At the end of each chapter, the main story is retold in a simple "bedtime story" for children ages 3 to 5. Here's an example by Heather Grovet.

The Tower of Babel

Noah's flood had happened many years earlier. Noah's family had grown until people covered the land again. Some of them remembered God, but many were too proud to think of anyone but themselves.

"We are a strong and mighty people," they said. "We don't need God."

Handsome Waraza was their leader. One day he had an idea. "Attention," Waraza announced. "We should build a very tall tower that will reach up to heaven! It will prove that we are the greatest people ever!"

The crowd clapped and cheered.

But God was sad. "Why won't they love Me? I would make them happy."

Waraza drew a picture of the tower. "We will use strong bricks and glue them together with tar. We can do this without God's help!"

The people began working.

"I need more bricks," someone yelled.

"Get some more tar," another called.

The tower grew taller . . . and . . . taller.

God was very upset. The people could all speak the same language, but it was full of angry and hateful words. They were so busy being proud that they didn't think of Him.

God decided to stop the people. He created many new languages so that each family spoke in different words and couldn't understand their neighbors.

Handsome Waraza tried to tell the workers what to do. "Sulummu ina birinni lishakin!" he called. But no one understood him.

He tried once more.""Nimdaggara lahamesh!" he ordered. But no one understood him.

The workers began to scream and yell. Finally they threw down their tools and rushed back to their homes. People who spoke the same languages moved away together, leaving the unfinished tower behind.

"I hope the people will now love Me," God said, "because I love them so very much."
